What is the benefit of having a dedicated IP address :?:

Dedicated IPs may be purchased for $2/month or a $12 one-time setup fee. A static IP is required for Anonymous FTP and SSL Certificates.

They can also be useful if you want to view your site VIA IP before DNS propogates.

A dedicated IP is needed for SSL and/or anonynous ftp on a site. Other than that it "uses up a number" for no real reason. (Some people think it may make a difference in the search engines. It does not.) It may make it convenient for viewing a site before DNS propagates, but usually there is a work-around for that for the first day or two.

I believe IP addresses have some influence on a site's ranking in SEs

Yes, to 'workaround' it just put the two nameservers into your desktop DNS if you're using a windows system. Now MACs I don't know :)

All right, Omni and PaPua -
Trying to learn something new here... :? Why/how does having an individual IP help a site's ranking in the SEs?
I have been rather successful with good Google rankings on some of my sites that have a lot of competition - and they are name-based hosting platforms. Example, I have 80+ sites on one RaQ with only three IPs. And, a few of those sites add to my income every month.
If it really does help - I will go to the trouble and (albeit small) expense to move my main producers. Even a 1 or 2 percent improvement will be well worth the effort for a couple of my travel sites.
TIA for any solid info.

This is danger in sharing IP number to other sites that are banned by search engines because of spamming, you website can be affected of this.
It will be useful if you share your IP that has a good and quality content, it is read by the search engines.
Crabby think about it this way. When the GoogleBot crawls a site they have to recognize the IP address or something (sorry don't know too much about it, still learning). Now if you have 1 IP shared amongsts 10 sites and one of them spams badly(or the GoogleBot thinks you're spamming), you have a good chance of not doing good for all 10 sites.

OK, thanks guys. Didn't think about it that way - I'll try to check that out to verify it some way. Now, if I control all of the sites, then I should be OK - as long as I don't do any SE spamming with one of them.
I appreciate the insight. This is a good example of a forum working well - sharing information so we can all improve our techniques.
C'ya,

My pleasure. Do take note though that it is still under debate. But if that site is important seo-wise, the $6 definitely outweighs the risk :)

This is the reason why you need to know that your IP is not shared with SPAMMERS
Good to have you have your own IP.
bheybugarin got it right. Risk is definitely there.

do you think that free servers are not good place to host your website because of SE & IP problem?
I heard this news before in infoseek.com, I think 2-3 years ago in their submit a site page.
Quite possible I would say. However the free servers would probably contain hundreds or thousands of IP addresses, so if you are lucky and do not get one that is spammed, your site would probably still be floating 8) Would appreciate it if someone could confirm it.
