USB/Firewire Externall Hard Drives

I've been interested in buying an external hard drive for my laptop. I plan to install Linux on it to work with, so obviously I need it to be bootable. So I am wondering if there are any Firewire/USB hard drives that are bootable. Appreciate any help.

I have been very impressed (happy :-D) with the VST mini HD that I have been using for the past few months. It is USB & Firewire. I have only been using the firewire on my two iMacs so far. It is self-mounting, and bootable on a Mac - although I have not booted from it, I have the option of selecting it as the startup device (standard built-in function w/ Macs).

You may need to check thr VST site (www.vsttech.com to research "bootability" with a unix setup. Good luck.

Guys where do these portable harddrives plug into on a laptop/desktop?

if not to the USB port, can you get USB connections for them yet or are they in the works?

They plug directly into the USB port or the "firewire" port. My VST is self-powered through firewire (both of my desktop iMacs have firewire), but I need to use the powerpack for USB (the only option on my PC laptop).

Very few new laptops (except for Mac PowerBooks or iBooks) have firewire built in. However, the more expensive ones usually do have firewire. There is also a PCMCIA solution for a firewire interface (for around 80 bucks).

That's true...I have seen those firewire addons to laptops, but for my specific laptop its gonna cost me around $120. So if I can't find a good USB deal, then I'm gonna have to purchase a second internal hard drive.
